PoE 2 Patch 0.5 Q&A Summary: Everything About the New Atlas, Leech Nerf, and Crafting
Read the full ZiggyD Q&A summary for Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5. Learn how the new Atlas works, Runic Ward crafting methods, and how to adapt your build .
ZiggyD's Q&A livestream with the GGG team confirmed that Path of Exile 2's Patch 0.5 will not introduce new classes, but will serve as the definitive template for how the endgame will function going forward. If you didn't have the time to watch the 2h30 broadcast, we summarized the main balance changes, the complete Atlas restructuring, and how the new crafting economy will impact your strategies.
What changed in the Atlas and the Fortress in Patch 0.5?
The Atlas is no longer an abstract procedural web; it is now a fixed geographic map of Wraeclast. Your main endgame progression goal is now the Fortress, a path with around 300 interconnected nodes. The old massive Atlas passive tree has been completely removed.
Instead of the giant tree, customization now happens through Atlas Masters. Each master (like Hilda for beasts or Doryani for corruption) unlocks specific mechanics, and you choose which master to load per map.
Completing the main Fortress questline (about 45 to 50 maps with efficient routing) is the equivalent of "completing the Atlas" in PoE 1. Furthermore, Pinnacle boss attempts are now infinite per entry fragment (way-stone), changing the farming math: you no longer have to fear losing a rare entry item on your first learning attempt. Co-op progression was also optimized so Atlas advancement is shared without robbing individual loot in league nodes.
How do Runes of Aldur and Runic Ward work?
The Runes of Aldur are the foundation of the new crafting economy, allowing you to inscribe remnants to increase monster difficulty in exchange for targeted rewards driven by hidden recipes. There are 160 runes in total.
This league also introduces a completely new paradigm for attributes and defenses:
- Runic Ward: A secondary sub-life pool tied to endgame gear. It requires you to sacrifice other defenses to scale it.
- Kalguuran Skills: About 25 new colorless skills that do not require Strength, Dexterity, or Intelligence, gated only by character level. They consume Runic Ward instead of mana.
- Meta-crafting: The rune system allows you to insert meta-crafting modifiers, roll your desired stats, and then safely remove the old rune, making the process much more legible and less risky than in PoE 1.
How do the Leech and defense balance changes affect your build?
Leech in PoE 2 was completely rewritten to have a single source of recovery and a hard damage cap (a maximum multiplicable limit). This effectively ends the viability of dealing absurd amounts of damage to generate infinite life recovery.
For players focused on extreme optimization and build synergies, these combat changes require immediate adaptation:
- End of trigger immortality: Since exceeding the damage cap no longer increases recovery, builds relying on fast trigger gears will need to invest in real, flat Leech values.
- EHP adjustments: GGG noticed that mid-game survivability was lower than expected. As a result, armor and evasion bases received significant buffs starting from Act 3.
- Energy Shield nerf: The combination of low ES pools (around 1k) with Ghost Dance was outperforming pure evasion investment and will be balanced downwards.
How did GGG define Quitting Points for this league?
GGG included clear progress bars across all league mechanics and the Fortress completion to establish defined "quitting points." The goal is to prevent players from playing for hundreds of hours without knowing what to conquer, effectively preventing burnout.
The balance itself is being guided by real telemetry. The median time to kill bosses is 119 seconds across the general player base, proving that streamer pacing is not the reality for the community.
To make experimentation easier until you reach those quitting points, Patch 0.5 will finally bring an In-Game Build Planner. Community sites will be able to generate 1-click direct import links, eliminating the need to copy and paste complex text files.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Do Pinnacle bosses have attempt limits in Patch 0.5? No. Once you have the entry fragment (way-stone), attempts are infinite. The design was adjusted to encourage players to try the fight and learn the mechanics without the fear of wasting a valuable item on the first try.
What is Runic Ward for Kalguuran skills? Runic Ward is a secondary sub-life pool. The new Kalguuran skills ignore traditional attribute requirements and consume this Runic Ward reserve instead of mana to be cast.
Will there be new classes in PoE 2 Patch 0.5? No. The team focused Patch 0.5 on establishing the definitive endgame template and refining the Atlas. Developing new weapons and classes takes more than one cycle and will be saved for upcoming major updates before version 1.0.
